Do your drains smell?
You know the feeling. You walk through the kitchen and suddenly a foul scent hits your nostrils. You get close to investigate- no dishes in the sink, trap is empty of debris, and there is no clear sign of where the smell is coming from. You get a little closer, and that is when you realize it is coming from deep within the drain itself.
If this is your experience – never fear. This is a common issue faced by most households, especially following the winter months where we prepare more holiday meals and tend to have more people over. Luckily for you, there are several easy steps you can take to remedy this issue.
What Causes the Smell?
One of the largest contributors to drain smell is gunk and bacteria. The guiltiest parties include food, hair, and grease. These particles can line your pipes over time. While these items may not become thick enough to create a clog, even a slight build-up can lead to a nasty stench.
What Can I Do?
There are two easy steps that you can take to eliminate food waste smell. One step is the hot liquid method. Pour either boiling water or white vinegar down the drain slowly. Rinse with cold water, and follow with more boiling water/vinegar as needed. Repeat if necessary.
Another successful method involves baking soda and vinegar. You’ll first run hot water down your drain. You will follow this with one cup of baking soda and two cups of hot vinegar. Let fizz and wait one hour. Flush the mixture through the drain using hot tap water.
