4 Common Thermostat Problems

4 Common Thermostat Problems

Your thermostat is vital in adjusting the temperature to your liking. Now that fall has arrived, you’re more likely to adjust to the seasonal changes. However, thermostats aren’t always perfect, and you may run into certain issues. There are four issues in particular that several homeowners across Colorado run into regularly.

1. Poor Placement

The placement of your thermostat matters more than many individuals realize. If placed in a poor position, it may read temperature incorrectly or inaccurately. Your thermostat should be placed roughly five feet above the floor and positioned away from windows and drafts.

2. Dying Batteries

This one is fairly straightforward. If you haven’t changed the batteries in a while, or your thermostat continually turns itself off, check the batteries and replace them as needed. If that doesn’t solve the problem, there may be another underlying issue that needs to be examined.

3. Declining Quality

Your thermostat can last nearly a decade, and if it begins to show signs of wear and tear, it may be time to replace it entirely. For example, if your thermostat isn’t heating your home properly after multiple tries, it may just be getting old and struggling to keep up.

4. Dirty Thermostat

One of the most overlooked problems, a thermostat can get quite dirty over time. This dirt and debris (such as dust) can interfere with the device’s ability to correctly measure temperature. Be sure to follow the device instructions on cleaning the thermostat before you begin, or have a qualified professional look at it for you.
